By voice vote, the House of Representatives passed legislation on May 6 that aims to collect information about accidents and
fatalities involving Postal Service contract drivers. The Mail Traffic Deaths Reporting Act of 2024 requires
the Postal Service to collect, track, and publicly report information related to deaths and injuries
resulting from traffic crashes involving vehicles transporting mail. Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA)
co-sponsored the bill with Congressman James Comer (R-KY), the Chairman of the Committee on
Oversight and Accountability, which has jurisdiction over Postal matters. In a statement, Connolly said
that, over the past three years, at least 79 people have been killed in crashes involving trucks contracted
by the Postal Service. This number could be higher, he said, because the Postal Service did not track and
report serious crashes involving its trucking contractors.
